Many people wonder, “If a patient beats up a doctor in some remote corner of the country, why should I care? Not my circus, not my monkeys”. Many doctors wonder,”If some doctor fleeces a patient in some remote corner of the country, why should I care? Not my circus, not my monkeys”.
It’s easy to ignore crimes, if we aren’t the victims. Every time, a doctor bleeds, some doctor somewhere thinks, “The lake may be full of goldfish, but I can’t jump in because, the gold fish can’t do anything when a bunch of piranhas descend on me”. Some doctor somewhere embraces defensive medicine. The oasis of goodwill gradually dries up.
The harsh fact, is our society is unable to differentiate between an individual and the group to which he belongs. In an ideal world, we are only responsible for our actions, not the actions of a group we may belong to. The doctrine of collective responsibility is despicable, but reigns supreme.
We are in this together. Whether or not we like, this is our circus. These are our monkeys.
Silence is our birthright — but the individual right to silence is not always appreciated by our collectivist society. As Dante said, the darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain neutrality in times of moral crisis.
During a moral crisis,silence becomes sin. Every sin of silence incurs a collective debt. Sooner or later that debt is paid.
